Johanna K slams into Berbice River Bridge (Guyana)

Fri Aug 03 09:01:28 CEST 2012 arnekiel

A sugar-laden ship, MV Johanna Key Thursday night slammed into the Berbice River Bridge, forcing a temporary halt to traffic, Works and Hydraulics Minister Robeson Benn confirmed. Benn told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the incident occured sometime after 9:00PM as the 700-tonne vessel was traveling from the Blairmont Estate. He said the traffic which was halted briefly has since resumed, according to GINA. Tugs from the German-owned bauxite company, Oldendorff, were being deployed to remove the ship. Reports say the ship was resting on one of the south-end pontoons that keeps the Berbice Bridge afloat. It has since been removed, according to authorities. http://ncnguyana.com/ncngy/index.php/local/local-news/social-issues/4102-breaking-sugar-vessel-slams-into-berbice-bridge-structure-intact-benn
