Ferry damaged in allision
THe 'Legionnaire' serving on the Bell Island-Portugal Cove route, was damaged on May 11, 2021, while approaching the wharf at Farewell. One of the vessel’s thrusters stopped operating due to an electrical issue and the vessel struck the wharf. Residents travelling to and from Fogo Island and Change Island had to rely on air travel while the ferry wasout of commission for repairs. Four fixed-wing aircraft trips per day were offered between Gander and Folo Island. Helicopter flights have been arranged for anyone travelling between Fogo Island, Changes Islands and Farewell. Flights departed from the dock at each location, based on demand. Aircraft passengers were required to wear masks at all times. Passengers were charged the standard walk-on ferry passenger fare for both the helicopter and fixed-wing services. Residents who wished to arrange flights could phone 709-256-1048
Ferry suffered technical issues
The 'Legionnaire' suffered mechanical trouble in the evening of Sep 6, 2020, and had to be sidelined in Wabana after its first run to Bell Island. Spare parts to carry out the needed repairs were available but they were waiting on a bid for a company to get the go-ahead to fix it. Some people stayed in their RVs all night in the line-up. Others helped themselves with boats.
Ferry suffered mechanical issues
The "Legionnaire" was taken out of service due to mechanical issues on May 7, 2018. The ferry which normally services the run between Bell Island and Portugal Cove will be out of commission while repairs are conducted on the vessel’s bow ramp. A technician was en route to begin repairs, and it was expectd the "Legionnaire" will be back in service by the weekend. Meanwhile, the "Flanders" will continue to cover the route on the one-vessel enhanced schedule.
