Two charges agains Filipino sailor filed

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions lodged two charges against Omar Taton Palms, 38. The Filipino sailor is accused of having endangered the "Benita" and assaulting the fourth engineer. The sailor is in custody. Two charges were filed against him on Sep 21. Under the first charge, he is prosecuted for inflicting bodily harm to the fourth engineer Alvin Venancio Maderse, a.o. fracturing his arm. Under the second charge, he is alleged to have endangered the safe navigation by interfering with the generators in the engine room of the ship which was brought off course and caused its sinking. The trial will be called on Oct 25. The ship finally sank in the night of July 30 around 93.5 nautical miles of the coast of Mauritius., having been found unfit for navigation.

13 Filipino sailors of the "Benita" have left the island Mauritius on Aug 8, Mthree others followed suit on Aug 10. Eight crew members will stay for theongoing investigation, including the captain, engineers and electricians.
