MV WESTERLAND 704109100

Wed Aug 25 17:37:26 CEST 2010 Timsen

On Aug 25, a group of villagers on Koro Island held the "Westerland" at the island jetty for about four hours by refusing to move from the ship ramp. The ship, which docked at the island's jetty at about 6 a.m., had stopped to pick up about 100 students and parents on their way to Suva. About 300 passengers were at the jetty but the ship could not load all as it was already loaded with passengers from Labasa and Savusavu. Other passengers who could not board sat on the ramp and refused to move. The vessel was delayed for another four hours as our workers tried to convince them with the reasons of not taking them on board. At about 11 a.m., they got off the ramp while some sat on the deck before the boat left for Suva. The passengers on the deck finally agreed to get off, allowing Suva passengers to continue with their journey.

Due to safety reasons, the Ministry of Transport stopped the "Westerland" from sailing to Rotuma in the afternoon of Aug 23, 2010. 400 passengers had paid their fares for the trip to Rotuma, and the number had to be reduced to 244. A survey was conducted by the Fiji Islands Marine Safety Administration surveyors at the Bligh Water Shipping vessel and found to be OHS compliant.

The “Westerland" ran aground Aug 7, 2010, at 4 a.m. while on a return trip from Rotuma with close to 60 passengers on board. The management of Bligh Water Shipping Ltd are investigating claims by the crew of the “Westerland” that the grounding of the vessel was due to evasive action taken by the captain to avoid an accident. The captain said there was a fishing boat without lights in the passage and he didn't see it until the last minute, when someone on the fishing boat waved a torch. He took evasive action to avoid a collision and struck a small reef running the vessel aground in the process. Fiji Islands Maritime Safety Administration (FIMSA) said standard investigative procedures had been followed and more would be known once they had all the information. Checks on the hull had revealed no damage to the ship. The “Westerland” resumed service Aug 9 afternoon.
