Barge threatened to sink near Lübbecke

Mon Mar 14 09:19:59 CET 2016 Timsen

On the Mittelland Canal near Lübbecke the "Nawatrans VI", 1302 ts (EU-No.: 04401160), was in danger of sinking on Mar 12, 2016. The master remarked a water ingress around 6 p,m. The fire brigades from Lübbecke and Espelkamp were alerted and rushed to the vessel which was loaded with 1450 tons converter lime being destined to Minden. The canal was barred for ship traffic at 6.15 p.m. The fire rescue managed to keep the barge afloat with five dewatering pumps. For this purpose it berthed at a bulkhead east of Lübbecke. An oil boom was laid out as a precaution. Divers from a company in Hille were called and tasked to try to patch the leak so the ship might continue its voyage to Minden and would not have to be lightered. The divers found out that the hull was pressed and had suffered a breach of 20 centimeters length and five centieters width possibly in the allision with an underwater obstruction. At midnight the situation was under control so far that the fire rescue could be partially stood down. The leak could be patched from inside, so that the ship would be able made its way to Minden. The canal was kept closed until Mar 13 at 8 a.m. At 10 a.m. the fire rescue removed the oil boom. It was expected the "Navatrans VI" would start the voyage to Minden on Mar 14, unload the cargo and then enter a local repair yard. The water police launched an investigation. Damaged barge lightered

Wed Nov 19 18:38:26 CET 2014 Timsen

On Nov 19 the cargo of the "Nawatrans VI" was transferred onto the 85-m-barge "Gloria" which had entered the port of Papenburg on Nov 16 and moored alongside the damaged ship. Samples taken from the cargo showed that it was not dangerous for the "Gloria" to take the load to Nordenham for disposal. The "Nawatrans VI" will be remaining in the Dever Port. The sealed leak was being monitored by the fire brigade. The prosecutors Aurich have launched an Investigation against the master. Toxic cargo still in Papenburg

Fri Nov 14 09:58:05 CET 2014 Timsen

On Nov 14 the "Nawatrans VI" was still being berthed in Papenburg with its toxic cargo on board, as no suitable ship for the cargo transfer has been found yet. The community was in contact with the owner and hoped that this might take place in the coming week. The fire rescue surveyed the ship again on Nov 12 and found it so far safe. But they remained on alert as long as the situation was resolved. The 50 tons contaminated water were meanwhile taken to Nordenham.
