Fire on Russian trawler in Kirkenes

Fri Jan 12 11:33:35 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 12, 2018, at 4.30 a.m. the police and fire brigade in Kirkenes were alerted after smoke development from the freezer compartment of the "Nerey" which was berthed at the Kimek-quay. The crew of 15 was safely evacuated. The fire department initially gained control of the fire. However, at 7 a.m. it reignited and was still raging at 10.30 a.m. The work of the fire fighters was complicated by toxic smoke so that further exploration of the ship should have been awaited until it has been vented. But as the smoke increased, it was necessary to sent smoke divers into the ship which managed to extinguis the visible flames, but now were still looking for the source. There were some problems getting access there three decks down in the narrow corridors. At worst the sight was one meter. The fire department inserted a pump that sucked out some smoke. Some water has flushed into the boat, but it was still stable. Part of the crew which was waiting on a nearby ship wanted to get back on their ship. As long as there was no acute hazard, they were not prevented from it. The firefighters left the place around 1:30 p.m. After the fire had been put out, the ship must be vented for at least one day before further investigations can be initiated. The Kimek Quay was used mostly by Russian fishing vessels which were being maintained on the Kimek AS shipyard.
