People trapped in container were from Afghanistan

The 35 people found trapped inside a container aboard the "Norstream" were from Afghanistan. One man was pronounced dead at the scene at the Port of Tilbury on the Thames River. Of the survivors, four remained hospitalized on Aug 17. The Border Force intended to speak to them via interpreters so they can piece together what happened and how they came to be in the container. Police believed they are members of the Sikh faith. Among those trapped were 13 children 12 years old or younger. The man who died was believed to be in his 40s. All of the containers on board the ship were searched and no other people were found.

Decontamination zone set up after immigrants were found

35 Indian-origin survivors, presumed to be illegal immigrants, were rescued from a container aboard the "Norstream" after workers on the dock heard screaming and banging from inside the container Several people from the Indian sub-continent, including at least seven children, were hospitalised at Tilbury in Essex. All of the 34 survivors were being treated for dehydration and hypothermia. They were believed to be of Indian-origin, possibly from Punjab region. They were inside the container for at least 12 hours. The "Norstream" left the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium at 10 p.m. on Aug 15 and arrived at Tilbury on Aug 16 at 6 a.m. The stowaways were found inside one of the 64 40-ft-containers, which were almost airtight when sealed. A decontamination zone was set up around the area where the immigrants were found.

Police have launched a homicide investigation into a man's death after 35 adults and children were discovered in a container which had been aboard the "Norstream" when it was being unloaded at Tilbury Docks in Essex. Police were called after the People who were believed to have come from the Indian subcontinent were found on the container, which arrived on the ship from Zeebrugge and was being unloaded at 7.35 a.m. by Port of Tilbury authorities. The survivors were being treated at local hospitals for severe dehydration and hypothermia. No-one was understood to be in a life threatening condition. The death of one man is being treated as a homicide investigation. Further checks were underway on the 50 containers on the P&O vessel, with nearly 30 having been searched so far. After initial treatment by ambulance crews, all patients have been conveyed to surrounding hospitals for further care; seven have been taken to Southend Hospital, nine to London Whitechapel Hospital and 18 to Basildon Hospital. Police were dealing with the incident alongside staff from Port of Tilbury, UK Border Force and the East of England Ambulance Service, the spokesman said, while a casualty bureau was being set up.
