Mystery surrounding distress calls of fishing vessels

Wed Feb 10 10:27:32 CET 2016 Timsen

Two EPIRB, belonging to the fishing vessel "Adex" and the "Nort", were activated on Feb 7, 2016, in the Okhotsk Sea about 130 miles west of Paramushir island in the Kuril Archipelago. An SAR operation was launched, on Feb 8 and 9 a surveillance aircraft was searching the area. Several immersion suits were found, and later an empty life raft. The cews reportedly comprised of Russian nationalities. RThe "Adex" had arrived at Petropavlovsk port, Kamchatka, on Dec 8, 2015, and was arrested by Russian Coast Guard suspected for illegal fishing. The vessel fled from Petropavlovsk on New Years eve. The last known AIS signal was received from Dec 16, Japan sea, off Hokkaido island, Japan.
