Swell and current contributed to capsize
Strong currents and the swell of the "Sten Nordic" have caused the sinking of the "L 242" off Porvoo. The fatal accident occurred shortly before the pilot was dropped off near the pilot station outside Emsalö on Dec 8. After the salvage of the boat which was built by Kewatec Aluboat in Karleby, Finland, the survey started. Soon it became clear that the pilot boat did not collide with the other ship, but was caught by its powerful stern swell and pushed onto its side in a 90 degree angle before finally capsizing. So far, there was no sign that there was anything wrong with the boat.
Sunken pilot boat raised 12 days after sinking
On Dec 19 the "Pilot L 242" was raised from a depth of 20 meters by the Coast Guard vessel "Turva" (IMO: 9650377). Around 2.15 p.m. the wreck emerged at the surface after chains had been attached and the hull turned upright. Once alongside, it was dewatered and taken to Tolkkisten in Porvoo for investigations which may take months. The wreck was lifted ashore in the evening. The "Turva" berthed at the Katajnokka Quay in Helsinki at 6 p.m. Finnish report with photos: https://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/art-2000005495834.html
Salvage within two weeks
The sunken "Pilot L 242" at Emsalö will be raised within the next two weeks once weather permits. The salvage will be carried out in cooperation with the Accident Investigation Center and the Finnish Environment Center. Both divers and a sufficiently large crane are needed to lift the boat, which was resting 20 to 30 meters deep south of Emsalö.
