Cruise ship monitored after norovirus outbreak

Tue Feb 13 11:40:09 CET 2024 Timsen

The Hawaii Department of Health continued to monitor a reported outbreak of gastrointestinal illness aboard the 'Queen Victoria' which docked in Honolulu on Feb. 12. Based on available information, the outbreak appeared to have been contained, and the docking of the cruise ship was not considered to be a threat to people in Hawaii. The Department, howver, coordinated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Timewise 129 passengers and 25 crew members were sick, but by the time the ship had arrived in San Francisco, the cases already had decreased substantially. Measures such as disinfecting surfaces have been implemented and ill passengers and crew were isolated. The CDC Vessel Sanitation Program also monitored the ship into the next voyage to ensure there was no carryover of illness. The VSP was also monitoring for any new reports of illness. The cause of the illness has not been confirmed, but the symptoms and spread appear to be similar to norovirus.

Thu Feb 08 11:31:03 CET 2024 Timsen

The 'Queen Victoria' docked in San Francisco from Feb 6 through Feb 7. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was investigating after more than 150 passengers and crew on the cruise ship got sick on the weeks-long international voyage originating from Hamburg on Jan 9. After leaving Port Canaveral, it was announced that people were getting ill, and they had to take the extra precautions after people had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness. Of the more than 1,800 passengers, 128 got sick, along with 25 of the more than 900 crew members. The main symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting. The crew isolated those who fell ill, and activated enhanced cleaning and disinfecting of the ship, along with safety protocols. The cause of the illness was unknown. With all aboard, the 'Queen Victoria' set sail from San Francisco just before 8 p.m., bound for Honolulu with an ETA as of Feb 12, and with a final destination of Sydney, Australia, with an ETA as of March 4.

139 people suffered from gastroenteritis

Wed Feb 07 11:42:34 CET 2024 Timsen

After the departure on Jan 11 from Southampton, UK, 139 people aboard the 'Queen Victoria'fell ill following an epidemic of gastroenteritis. In total, of the 2,791 people on board the ship, 123 passengers and 16 crew members experienced symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. The origin of the epidemic remained unknown. The Cunard Cruise Line immediately activated its enhanced health and safety protocols. The 'Queen Victoria' was scheduled to make several stops, including one in San Francisco, before ending its cruise in Honolulu on Feb 12. To deal with the outbreak, the cruise line decided to isolate passengers and crew members showing symptoms. Cleaning and disinfection procedures have also been increased in accordance with the ship's outbreak prevention and response plan. The measures have been effective. The ship sanitation program set up by the CDC continued to monitor the evolution of the epidemic remotely, in particular by monitoring compliance with ship sanitation and response procedures
