Man who jumped from ferry saved

Thu Oct 10 22:17:42 CEST 2013 Timsen

An emotionally disturbed man jumped from the "Samuel I. Newhouse" but was quickly pulled from the water on Oct 10, 2013. The unidentified man plunged into the water at 1:17 p.m. from the Brooklyn-side of the ferry as it headed to Staten Island. He was on the upper level of the three-deck when he he went overboard. After the man jumped, the ferry reversed course and headed back toward Manhattan before stopping in the water in an attempt to rescue the man. An orange life preserver was thrown into the water. As passengers clustered around ferry doors and windows, workers with the tugboat "Lee T. Moran" from Moran Shipyard in Port Richmond attempted to rescue the man by lowering a ladder and a floatation device into the water. NYPD Harbor Patrol units arrived on the scene and quickly got the man, who was conscious, out of the water. The ferry had left Whitehall Terminal at 1 p.m. It was fifteen minutes late docking in St. George due to the incident. The man was taken to Lutheran Hospital and listed in stable condition.
