Tanker rescued crew of sunken cargo ship

Sat Dec 16 20:44:24 CET 2017 Timsen

Coast Guard Karnataka personnel coordinated the rescue operation of eight crew members of the cargo vessel "Sumithra" that sank off Androth island in Lakshadweep on Dec 15, 2017. It had set on sail from Beypore Port in the Kozhikode district with construction material and vegetables and was drifting since Dec 13 off Androth island before sinking in stormy seas. The crew was rescued by the "Gaschem Nordsee", which was transiting the area. The Indian Coast Guard ship "Savithribai Phule", based in Mangaluru, rushed to the rescue, but by the time it reached the spot, the "Sumithra" had already sunk. It picked up the crew members from the tanker, provided them first aid, food, water and medicine, before handing them over to the Lakshadweep administration at Androth Port on Dec 16.
