Flooding on the Easter Ems

Wed Sep 16 09:18:36 CEST 2015 Timsen

On Sep 15, 2014, around 10 a.m. the "Memmert" announced severe flooding in the area of the propeller shaft. The ship, which carries out survey work for the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coast Protection and Nature Conservation (NLKWN) was near buoy 33 ton in the Easter Ems at that time and had a crew of two on board. On scene was a strong wind from southeast with six Beaufort and shower squalls. The MRCC in Bremen alerted the lifeboat "Alfried Krupp" of the DGzRS station Borkum. Also nearby were a buoy tender of the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration as well as a survey ship of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Both remained on standby, while the lifeboat started pumping out water so that the "Memmert" could start its engine again. The daugter boat "Glückauf" then escorted the "Memmert" to Greetsiel while the flooding was kept under control with the help of mobile bilge pumps. In Greetsiel the vessel was immediately pulled out of the water dto repair the damage.
