Akaki with engine trouble in Celtic Sea

Thu Oct 25 09:50:09 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Akaki" was disabled on Oct 24, 2018 in the in Celtic Sea SSE of the Isles of Scilly en route from Sept Iles to Dunkirk. The vessel with a crew of 21 on board was NUC 20 nautical miles southeast of Isles of Scilly, in position 49 36 09.2N, 006 04 43.0W, at 10.20 a.m. It first appeared as not under command on AIS approximately 20 miles west of the TSS south of Isles of Scilly at 01.30 a.m. due to a problem with engine valve. The vessel then reported that repairs were completed and it was under way, before transiting the TSS in eastbound direction. The vessel stopped again four nautical miles ESE of the exit to the TSS and reported as NUC due to its inability to start the engine. Subsequently, the injector valve cylinder No.1 was replaced, but again the vessel stopped, reporting as NUC once again. No tug has been assigned. DCPSO has been informed and Duty CPSO was liaising with Duty Surveyor. The vessel was carrying 7,859 metric tonnes of iron ore on board, along with low sulphur marine gas oil as bunkers. The ship finally dropped anchor in the Falmouth Bay 11 milles SSE of Lizard Pt. in pos. 49° 47.28' N 005° 5.19' W on Oct 25 at 8.45 a.m., while the crew was trying to fix engine by own means. It was not permitted to come close within 10 nautical miles of the coast without a tug to escort or tow. On Oct 28 at 2.40 p.m. the ship resumed the voyage with an ETA at Dunkirck as of Oct 29.
