New €26MIll. container terminal and industry hub project at Kalundborg
Plans are well advanced for work to start at the Danish port of Kalundborg on a major investment that will see a new container terminal and industry hub developed on the south side of the harbour.
Costed at €26 million the new terminal will provide berthing for the largest container ships as well as land for container handling and related industries.
Kalundborg is located in what is claimed to be the Greater Copenhagen area and the new development is proposed to help establish Kalundborg as the major container port for the area. To be called Ny Vesthavn, the new container dock will have an area of 330,000 square metres and will have an alongside berth of 500 metres which will have a depth alongside of 15 metres which is claimed to be unique for the Zealand and the Greater Copenhagen area. www.maritimejourn...
Port of Emden completes major €6.2 million modernisation project
The German North Sea port of Emden has completed one major €6.2 million modernisation project and is on track to complete a second in a bid to boost cargo handling and improve ship access.
The projects are part of an €85 million expansion and upgrading programme for the German Ems Estuary seaport, being undertaken and funded by the federal state of Lower Saxony up to 2020. Emden is the third biggest vehicle handling port in Europe after local rival Bremerhaven and the Dutch port of Zeebrugge. Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL) continued its efforts at being recognised as a premier port of call when it walked away with the prestigious ‘Best Multi-Purpose Port in the Caribbean’ award recently.
The award was presented at the just-concluded 46th Caribbean Shipping Association’s Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Trinidad.

ICTSI opens new Basra Gateway Terminal at Umm Qasr
International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) opened the first phase of the new green field terminal at the Port of Umm Qasr in October 2016 through Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), its wholly owned subsidiary.
The expansion will boost the port’s efficiency with added cargo handling capacity and modern, reliable and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The first phase saw US $130m invested, which is jointly funded by ICTSI and the Iraqi Government making it the first-of-its kind investment in Iraq to receive completely foreign funding.
The development is a part of a long-term contract signed in 2014 by ICTSI with General Company for Ports of Iraq to operate, develop and expand the Umm Qasr Port, which is the main gateway to the Iraqi market.

‘Deep Water Container Port to start working this year’
The Senate Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping was given detailed briefing on the functions and organizational structure of Port Qasim Authority besides the status and progress of deep sea berth in Karachi Port Trust.
According to press release, the committee met Monday and was presided over by its Chairman Senator Muhammad Ali Khan Saif. KPT was informed that operational hurdles have been removed and the Deep Water Container Port would be operational by the end of this year. The committee was given a detailed briefing on the appointments and promotions made by PQA during last five years. The committee was surprised that no appointment on any vacancy has been made from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Officials stated that proper rules have been formulated for recruitment now.
PQA has earned a net profit of Rs 4321.707 million. It has handled 47 LNG vessels. The committee was also briefed about the second LNG project. Regarding allotment of plots during last three years, the PQA informed that a 40 acres plot has been allotted to Ms. Pak Suzuki Motors for automobile industry, a 13.18 acres plot to Ms Engro LNG terminal for construction of LNG terminal and a 200 acres land allotted to Ms Port Qasim Electric Power for construction of power plant. The meeting was attended by Senators Naseema Ehsan, Agha Shahbaz Durrani and Taj Haider. Secretary of the ministry and senior officers of PQA and KPT were also present at the meeting.

Construction works on the Takoradi Container Terminal which forms part of the extension of the Takoradi port is expected to be completed in November.
When fully operational, the Takoradi container terminal will have a holding capacity of 7500 tons of imported containers.
It will also be linked by both road and rail on the eastern side to the port of Takoradi.
The Takoradi Container Terminal will serve as a one-stop-shop for all container procedures where it will house customs and other state agencies required in the clearance process.
Carnival Cruise Line Signs Agreement To Expand Terminal Operations At The Port Of Long Beach
Carnival Cruise Line has signed an agreement with landlord Urban Commons and the City of Long Beach, Calif., to expand the Long Beach Cruise Terminal facility to accommodate larger ships in the future and enhance its terminal operations. Gazpromneft Delivers More Than 32,000 Tonnes of Bunkers to Royal Caribbean in St Petersburg
Gazpromneft Marine Bunker Ltd (Gazpromneft) says it delivered more than 32,000 tonnes of bunkers to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (Royal Caribbean) in St Petersburg during the 2016 cruise season.
Bunkers provided to Royal Caribbean during the season are noted to have included 19,000 tonnes of fuel oil and more than 13,000 tonnes of distillate fuel.
Gazpromneft says it conducted 49 bunkering operations on Royal Caribbean vessels calling the port of St. Petersburg from early May to mid-September 2016.

New Norwegian shortsea line connecting Oslo and Rotterdam
Oct. 25 2016 - The newly established Norwegian shipping line, Viasea Shipping AS, starts a container line between Rotterdam and the Oslofjord in early November. A large Norwegian forwarder is behind the initiative.
Uniquely, Viasea will focuse on shortsea services, ie intra-European container shipping without feeder containers.
The main focus is regularity and predictability - and to be a real alternative to trucks between many parts of Europe and Norway.
