One body recovered after shipwreck

Thu Jan 04 13:41:25 CET 2018 Timsen

Rescuers have found one body from the "Chang Ping" off Shanghai on Jan 4. The identity of the body has not yet been confirmed, and rescuers were still searching for the nine other missing sailors. Rescuers have been hindered by large waves, wind and low underwater visibility. The "Changping," loaded with 5,000 tonnes of steel, sank near the Yangtze River estuary during a shift change aboard within just three to four minutes. Li Weilin and another crew member screamed for help and were rescued by a nearby boat. Another survivor, Jiang Yuzhao, successfully jumped onto another boat. The city's maritime search and rescue center has dispatched seven patrol vessels, three salvage ships and five other boats to join the search.

10 sailors missing after collision

Wed Jan 03 09:58:59 CET 2018 Timsen

The freighters "Chang Ping" and the "Xinwang 138", both loaded with steel, were in collision in the night of Jan 2, 2018, on the Wusong Kou anchorage of Shanghai. The "Chang Ping", which was enroute from Yingkou to Shanghai, sank after the collision. At 11.35 p.m. an SAR operation was launched to rescue the 13 crew members. On Jan 2 by 1 a.m. three of them were rescued, including the Chief Officer, an engineer and a sailor. The city's maritime search and rescue centre were continuing the search, while ten crew members remained unaccounted for. As of 9:00 am on Wednesday, ten cruise ships from the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration, a rescue ship from the East China Sea Rescue Bureau and a police boat from the Shanghai Coast Guard had been dispatched to conduct on-site search and rescue operations. Six waste cleaning boats were also at the scene. Further, three salvage ships have pinpointed the spot where the ship was lost. Rescue divers meanwhile found a four square-meter hole in the hull, believed to have directly caused the ship to sink, but the current was too fast for them to enter.. The mast on the wheelhouse remained above the water. The wreck didn’t affect the passing traffic because the freighter sank outside the fairway. The "Xinwang 138" berthed in Shanghai after the accident.
