Oil boom destroyed - oil spill on Danube

On Oct 10 at 5.30 p.m. an oil pollution was remarked near the suspension bridge in Passau on the Danube. The alerted fire brigade found out that the oil which drifted downriver and was traced even behind Kachlet originated from the 'Discover' which had run aground on the river between Deggendorf and Vilshofen on Sep 8 and had been breached on rocks. Since having been refloated, the ship was berthed in the port of Passau and surrounded by an oil boom which prevented the oil leaking out of the ship from spreading. The oil boom obviously was destroyed by another ship leaving the port and allowed the spreading of the oil which had been contained inside the barrier. The fire rescue deployed 40 men of the main station supported by forces from Ilzstadt and Grubweg to recover the oil. The amount of damage was unknown to date. Grounding on Danube

The "Discover", 1492 ts (EU-No.: 02302777), ran aground on the Danube at river km 2251 along with the barge ‘Ast-1‘ between Vilshjofen and Hofkirchen close to Hilgartsberg on Sep 8, 2019. As a part of the barge remained within the fairway, the river had to be barred fo all passing ship traffic between Deggendorf and Passau. The ship's hull was breached when it ran onto a rock and suffered water ingress. As the dewatering pumps could not cope with the flooding, the water level was rising five centimeters per hour, so that the master alerted the fire brigade which attended with stronger pumps. In the evening they were released by forces of the Technical Support Work (THW). The work boat 'Ilz‘ (MMSI: MMSI:211660150) stabilized the "Discover" at the grounding position. The "Ast-1" was removed. The "Discover" will have to be lightered which was to take place on Sep 9. The rape loaded barge was sailing river upstream, coming from Vilshofen, when it got stuck in pos. 48° 38.85' N 013° 10.15' E. In the afternoon of Sep 9 another barge pulled the "Discover" off.
