Salvaged ship will be auctioned
The 'Uniprofit', which was towed to the port of Kaohsiung on March 8 after it ran aground off the coast of southeastern Taiwan, will be auctioned off on Sep 5, with the starting bid set at 66 million New Taiwan dollars. Interested parties were asked to contact the branch by Aug 25. The Chinese owner has not expressed any interest in recovering the vessel. After the vessel was towed to Kaohsiung City, the 16 crew members spent more than six months on board before being allowed to leave Taiwan. The cargo owners paid a 74 million New Taiwan dollars (2.33 million American dollars) share of the towing fees and recovered the freight, but the port authorities were still owed $8 million New Taiwan dollars. As the Chinese owner had not contacted Taiwan after attending the first meeting about the vessel's fate, the port authorities decided to hand over the case to the Ministry of Justice Administrative Enforcement Agency.
