Seafarers 'grossly underpaid' on ship delivering to Alcoa

Thu Jan 14 10:00:10 CET 2016 arnekiel

A ship delivering products to aluminium giant Alcoa has allegedly underpaid its crew more than $100,000 in "stolen wages". The Hong Kong-registered carrier, Gold River, which hauled petroleum coke to Alcoa's Portland refinery in Victoria, is the second ship used by the company to face claims of worker exploitation in recent months. It has prompted union calls for Alcoa to exercise greater responsibility. Docked in Alcoa's Portland terminal, Gold River was this week boarded by the international seafarers' union. Inspectors spoke with the ship's Chinese crew and audited their wage records. The ship's operator has now agreed to pay $112,000 to the crew, according to the International Transport Workers Federation. Hong Kong company Pacific Basin, which owns the ship, would not comment. News of the alleged exploitation comes days after the ship took the wharf position of Alcoa's MV Portland, which was removed on Tuesday night following a long industrial dispute Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/national/seafarers-grossly-underpaid-on-ship-delivering-to-alcoa-20160114-gm64k0.html#ixzz3xCvpfWHR
