VENETIA 9497414

Sat Dec 11 17:32:50 CET 2010 Timsen

At 9.00 a.m. Dec 9, 2010, Falmouth Coastguard concluded an operation to rescue the SY "Sparrow" damaged following a collision with an f/v 400 nautical miles west of Cape Verde. At 1.00 a.m. on Dec 4, Falmouth Coastguard was alerted via satellite phone by the yacht "Ahead" to the plight of the German registered 10 metre yacht "Sparrow" that she was dismasted and holed. The watch at Falmouth identified emergency contact details and began the co-ordination of the rescue effort including a satellite broadcast to shipping in the area of the incident that may be in a position to assist. The "AS Venetia" responded and proceeded to the "Sparrow". The "AS Venetia" relayed communications between Falmouth Coastguard and the "Sparrow" and established the condition of the crew and the severity of the damage. The two Germans on board were uninjured and decided to continue under engine power to Cape Verde. The "AS Venetia" provided them with additional diesel for the journey.
