Last two crew members released

All crew on board the 'Gulf Sky' vessel held-up in Iran have now returned to New Delhi on July 22. The last two sailors who were detained in Iran after being hijacked on board an oil tanker arrived home in India this week after the tanker were hijacked on July 5 and told to sail for Iran. Days after arrival in Bandar Abbas, all but two of the ship’s crew were flown back to Mumbai. The pair that remained were without passports and had to stay in Tehran.

Tanker hijacked

The 'Gulf Sky' which has been sought by the U.S. over allegedly circumventing sanctions on Iran was hijacked on July 5 off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. Satellite photos showed the vessel in Iranian waters on July 15. It wasn't immediately clear what happened aboard the tanker, though its reported hijacking took place after months of tensions between Iran and the U.S. 26 of the Indian sailors on board had made it back to India, while two remained in Tehran.

Tanker missing since days

The "Gluf Sky' and its 22 Indian crew members have been missing since one week according to the NGO Human Rights at Sea. The owner was faicing US action for aiding the Islamic Revolutionary Guards in Iran. The location of the tanker was unknown since eight days and the NGO was concerned about the well being of the crew. On May 27, 2020, the master cotacted the NGO while anchored off Port Khor Fakkan Anch and reported to have inadequate supplies such as food, water, fuel, medical supplies and personal protection on board. The condition of the crew worsened after a dispute between the present and previous owners. The NGO alerted the UAE authorities on July 13. The vessel was orderer to be arrested.
