Sunken barge raised

The "Scelerate" was raised by the "Hebolift 7" on the Scheldt between Bornem and Temse on Apr 6 at 6 p.m. During the evening hours the cargo of 300 tons rape was to be lightered with a crane before the barge may be taken to a yard. Salvage of barge underway

The salvage of the Belgian barge "Scelerate", 341 ts (EU-No.: 06504143), which had sunk on March 14 at 11 a.m. after breaking lose from the "Mascaret", 437 ts (EU-No.: 01823274), following the allision with a pillar of the Bornem Bridge on the Scheldt between Bornem and Temse started on Apr 5. The sheerleg "Hebolift 7" with a lifting capacity of 300 tons was to remove the wreck on Apr 6. The barge was loaded with a large consignment of rape. Before the barge will be taken to a shipyard the cargo must be removed. The Nautical Commission was currently examining how the accident could happen- Possibly a piece of wood got entangled inthe propeller, but this was not yet for certain. Barge sank after allision with bridge

At Temse in East-Vlaandern the Dutch flagged, self propelled barge "Mascaret", 437 ts (EU-No.: 01823274), coming from Antwerp, allided with a pillar of the Scheldt-Bornem-Bridge on March 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. The pushed Belgian barge "Scelerate", 341 ts (EU-No.: 06504143), broke lose and suffered immediate water ingress. The master of the "Mascaret" managed to get his ship to the quay at Temse where he, his pregnant wife and a child were taken off by the fire brigade. Attempts to save the barge stuck at the bridge failed. She had suffered immediately water ingress and was completely submerged at the time of the high tide at 3 p.m. The ship traffic was allowed to pass the site with caution, and also the traffic on the bridge could continue.
