Efforts to salvage longliner hampered by bad weather

Tue May 14 13:12:12 CEST 2019 Timsen

Efforts to salvage the "Masonic" which ran aground on May 7 have been unsuccessful to date, and the ship remained on the rocks on the Spanish Islands. Rough seas and high winds prevented salvage crews from recovering vessel and the large quantity of fuel on board. The "Masonic" was hard aground on the rocks of the Spanish Islands, about 80 miles south of Sitka. The longliner has been pushed on its side, and was being battered by waves and wind. Salvage crews were able to board the Masonic on May 8, just one day after it grounded, and plugged the fuel vents. But since then no one has been able to return to the "Masonic", and the weather has been taking a huge toll on the boat. The Sitka-based salvage company Hanson Maritime attempted to lighter the estimated 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel from the Masonic on May 12, but was forced to abandon the effort. Conditions became so bad that Hanson could not deploy a containment boom. It was expected that the vessel was going to continue to deteriorate to the point of collapse. Fishing vessel abandoned off Cape Decision

Wed May 08 09:48:42 CEST 2019 Timsen

The US Coast Guard rescued five fishermen from a life raft on May 7, 2019, after they were forced to abandon the "Masonic" which was taking on water southeast of Sitka. The Coast Guard Juneau Command Center watchstanders monitoring Channel 16 heard “Mayday, vessel Masonic going down,” at approximately 2:33 a.m. Watchstanders located the vessel’s last position south of Cape Decision via their automatic identification system (AIS) after attempts to raise the caller on the radio were unsuccessful. Sector Juneau watchstanders requested the launch of the Sitka helicopter crew and the Petersburg-based Coast Guard Cutter "Anacapa" to the area, and issued an urgent marine information broadcast. The cruise ship "Oosterdam" responded to the UMIB to offer assistance. Loading Ad An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka located the life raft on the north side of Coronation Island at approximately 4 a.m., with all five people aboard wearing cold weather survival suits. The life raft was tied off to the stern of the grounded fishing vessel. The helicopter hoisted all five fishermen and brought them to Sitka. The "Masonic" had requested and received a commercial fishing vessel dockside examination prior to departing on this fishing trip. A Sitka-based Coast Guard commercial fishing safety specialist examined the vessel and its equipment, including verifying the presence of emergency gear. The crew had conducted an abandon ship drill the day before the exam, including donning the survival suits. Pollution responders from Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Sitka were monitoring the area for any indications of pollution from the grounded vessel. The cause of the incident was under investigation. Report with video: https://mustreadalaska.com/coast-guard-rescues-five-near-coronation-island-in-southeast/
