Death on board off East London

Thu Sep 12 12:41:27 CEST 2013 Timsen

On Sep 10, 2013, at 7 p.m. the East London NSRI crew was alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority to prepare to launch on Sep 11 at 4.30 a.m. to rendezvous with the "Mid Fortune" in order to render medical assistance and medical evacuation of a 45 year old Indian crewman suffering a high temperature and unconsciousness from unknown causes. The ship, sailing from Singapore to Togo, fully laden with palm oil alerted the MRCC that their crewman had fallen ill from unknown causes and was unconscious and requiring urgent medical assistance. A Government Health EMS duty doctor gave medical advice to the ships medic and the ship was instructed to immediately divert and head towards the nearest Port, which was East London. The NSRI East London launchedthe "Spirit of Lotto" at 2 a.m. accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, and rendezvoused with the ship 6 nautical miles off East London. An EC Government Health EMS ambulance was dispatched to stand-by at our sea rescue base. On arrival on-scene an NSRI rescuer and the EMS rescue paramedic were transferred onboard the ship where they found the ships crewman to be deceased. The cause of death was not known. The body has been removed from the ship and brought to Port aboard the sea rescue craft and handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services.
