Inspections in Algeciras prior to operation on Algeciras-Tangier Med route

The “Monte Express” has been docked in the port of Algeciras since June 1, 2026, where it has undergone inspections by the Maritime Authority prior to its incorporation into the Algeciras-Tangier Med route, chartered by the Moroccan company AML for Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) 2026. The vessel came from the Corsica Linea fleet. This company put the ship up for sale after recently acquiring the ferry “Capu di Maru,” formerly the “Kalliste,” from La Méridionale, and since May 2026 has been owned by the Egyptian company UME, which has a significant relationship with Spanish shipping companies. Currently, it has chartered the ro-ro vessel “Gubal Express” to Trasmed to handle hazardous goods traffic in the Balearic Islands, and the ferry “Wasa Express” continues to operate on the Algeciras-Tangier Med route.

Following the deployment of the 'Capu di Maru', formerly sailing as the ' Kalliste', which was acquired earlier in 2026 from La Méridionale, Corsica Linea has sold the 'Monte d'Oro'. The vessel has now been renamed 'Monte Express' and has changed from the French flag to the Cypriot flag. The ferry arrived in Alexandria on May 15. There has yet been no official announcement regarding the new ownership, but there were strong indications that the vessel has been purchased by the Alexandria-based company UME Shipping.

Ferry diverted due to storm

Due to a strong gale which swept Corsica, the "Monte d'Oro" could not dock at L'Ile-Rousse in the morning of March 13, 2018, and was diverted to Ajaccio. The ferry had left the port of Marseille in the night of March 12 with about 40 passengers and 15 trailers and was to reach the port of L'Ile Rousse at 7 a.m. But given the strong west wind that had blown for 24 hours in Corsica, the ferry could not dock as planned. The ferry company chose to divert the ship to the port of Ajaccio, where it docked in the afternoon. All passengers have been informed and had the choice to leave tonight for Marseilleor Bastia aboard the "Piana" or sail to Ajaccio with the "Monte d'Oro". On March 13 winds reached 60/70 km / h on the east coast of Cap Corse, and 40/50 km/h on the Balagne.
