Medevac off Falmouth

Thu Mar 28 11:42:20 CET 2013 Timsen

A Falmouth lifeboat crew carried out an emergency medical evacuation in the morning of Mar 26, 2013, after the "Patea"'s second engineer was struck down with appendicitis. The All Weather Lifeboat was tasked to the tanker at 4.33 a.m. She was on passage from Port Jerome in Le Harve to Pembroke in Wales when the man fell ill. The Coastguard advised the "Patea" to divert to Falmouth where the lifeboat would carry out an evacuation. Ship and lifeboat rendezvoused five miles south of Falmouth at 5.48 a.m. when two lifeboat crew went aboard the Patea to assess the casualty's condition. After being placed on the lifeboat's stretcher, he was lowered down to the lifeboat using the ship's crane. At 6.15 a.m., once all the crew were back aboard, the lifeboat headed back to Falmouth where the casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske for treatment.
