Investigation into ferry accident launched

The National Transportation Safety Committee will be carrying out the investigation regarding the collision of the 'Serasi I' and the cargo m/v 'Batanghari Mas' (IMO: 9586291) while crossing the Bangka Strait, Bangka Belitung Islands on Dec 1. The Harbour Master's Office and Port Authority in Muntok have interviewed the cabin crew and will still interview others including the master of the 'Serasi I'. . Local authorities have also installed buoys around the area where the vessel sank to warn passing vessels.

Rescued crew taken to Tanjung Kalian Muntok

The 17 crew members of the 'Serasi I' were taken to the Port of Tanjung Kalian Muntok, West Bangka, after their ship sank due to the damage suffereed in the collision with the cargo m/v 'Batanghari Mas' (IMO: 9586291), while crossing the Bangka Strait, Bangka Belitung Islands early on Dec 1. The 'Serasi I' was serving the Patimban-Belawan route, when the accident happened. The captain of the vessel planned to beach the ship, but it listed and finally turned bottom up, so that the crew had to save themselves using lifecrafts. All castaways were taken on board the KM 'Lotus' safe and sound.

Vehicles carrier sank following collision

The 'Serasi 1' with 17 crew members and 497 vehicles on board was in collision with the cargo m/v 'Batanghari Mas' (IMO: 9586291) on Dec 1, 2022, at around 2 a.m. LT in the Bangka Strait, Bangka Belitung Islands, en route from Patimban, Northwest Java, to Belawan, North Sumatra. The hull of the vehicles carrier was breached, and it suffered a massive water ingress. The Captain issued a distress signal and ordered the crew to abandon ship. The.BASARNAS dispatched two rescue vessels. The 17 crew members were initially taken aboard a passing vessel and later transferred by the SAR teams to shore. 12 of the castaways were uninjuredm and five needed to be taken to a local medical facility for treatment of their injuries suffered during the evacuation.
