Three merchant ships in SAR operation for distressed migrants
On May 3, 2020, the cargo m/v 'Marina', while enroute from Sfax to Sousse, resued 78 distressed migrants who were on a boat in difficulty in the central Mediterranean in the evening. Among the rescued was a pregnant woman. Three ships had started a search after the MRCC aksed them to respond. Immediately afterwards, another of the ships that were involved in the search, the "Pyxis Epsilon", found a dinghy with 43 people on board in the same area. Both ships were in the SAR zone of Malta, but just 20 miles from Lampedusa. During the night no Italian military vessel seemed to have left the island of Pelagie to participate in the operation. Both vessels along with the third ship on scene, the cargo m/v 'Karina', then headed for Lampedusa. But, while the "Marina" with its 78 migrants remained out of Italian waters and was now at anchor waiting for instructions, the "Pyxis Epsilon" has continued to escort the dinghy with the 43 people, all of them sub-Saharan, into Italian waters where the migrants were taken overby patrol boats of the Coast Guard and the Guardia di Finanza and transported to Lampedusa where they arrived in the afternoon. The tanker resumed its route to Tunisia.
