AHTS sank after fire
The "Ramnco Crusader" caught fire and sank in Brazil while working for the local oil and gas company Petrobras. 15 people were evacuated before the ship went down about 45 nautical miles off the Beberibe in the state of Ceara. The fire broke out in the engine room on Aug 12, 2013, at 3 p.m. There were no injuries or spills. The anchor handling vessel sank six hours after the fire occurred. The accident has been reported to the Brazilian authorities. The area where the ship sank was monitored by ships and aircraft. The ship worked for the company Daimond on a five-year contract with the semi-submersibleriggen Ocean Courage, when the fire broke out. The 'Ramco Crusader', which had sunk in 2013 after a fire while it was supporting drilling operations off Brazil, was recovered by SMIT Salvage in April 2020. The 15 crew members had safely evacuated the ship. The vessel drifted about 25 miles off the coast, where it sank in 27 meter of water deapth. Bunkers and pollutants were recovered from the wreck. Another contractor did several attempts to lift and relocate the wreck. Insurers at the end, contracted SMIT Salvage for this task. Divers meticulously sealed all required tanks and spaces for inducing pressurised air. Also standpipes and valves to control the volumes of air were fitted. SMIT’s naval architects, together with the team on site worked out a refloating sequence. To use the best weather window for the operation, SMIT mobilised the AHTS 'Sovereign' of Boskalis Offshore in February and sent it to the site along with the 'Smitbarge 1. After checking the work of the previous year and some minor adjustments, activities focussed on the refloating. Divers rigged air hoses down to the wreck. In two steps, the hull was raised, upside down, to the surface. Works were finalised with the removal of various parts and debris from the seabed with the 300 ton crane of the 'Smitbarge 1'.
