Arrest of ship overturned by civil court

Wed Mar 20 10:19:59 CET 2024 Timsen

An Italian civil court has overturned the arrest of the 'Humanity 1'. The responsible judge in the southern Italian city of Crotone found the authorities' determination of "Humanity 1" to be unlawful after his preliminary assessment on March 18. The ship had arrived in the port of Crotone after rescuing 77 migrants and was detained for 20 days. The crew of the “Humanity 1” said they had helped migrants who had gotten into distress in three boats off Libya and Tunisia. Helpers and refugees were also threatened with armed force by the so-called Libyan Coastguard. There were chaotic scenes. and one person drowned. Shortly afterwards, the people were brought ashore in Calabria. Authorities accused the crew of the ship of violating rules for rescuing migrant boats in the Mediterranean. SOS Humanity appealed. According to the aid organization, a final hearing in the process is scheduled for mid-April.

NGO Humanity protesting false allegations

Thu Mar 07 12:11:46 CET 2024 Timsen

The German humanitarian NGO SOS Humanity is protesting what it calls “false allegations,” after the 'Humanity 1' was involved in an altercation with the Libyan Coast Guard on March 2 in the Mediterranean. After offloading 77 people they had rescued, the Italian authorities slapped the vessel with a 20-day detention order. Italy and the NGOs have been at odds for more than a year now as the government imposed stricter rules on the operation of the private charity vessels. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government imposed the new rules, but so far, the detentions were due to reports of conditions on the vessels or charges that the crews disregarded orders from the Italian authorities on when and where to offload the people rescued from the small boats in the Mediterranean. SOS Humanity however contended the Italian authorities “attempted to justify the arrest of the Humanity 1 on the grounds that the Humanity 1 would have caused a dangerous situation for the people in distress at sea.” The captain of the vessel claimed the authorities could not explain to him why his vessel was being detained. He said in a statement, “Our vessel has been detained even though we followed international law at all times. We have been transparent and provided all evidence.” Report with photos: https://maritime-executive.com/article/german-ngo-protests-vessel-s-detention-in-italy-after-dispute-with-libyans

Rescue ship seized in Crotone

Wed Mar 06 10:42:08 CET 2024 Timsen

The organization SOS Humanity announced on March 6 that the “Humanity 1” was detained in Crotone for a period of 20 days after rescuing 77 migrants from three boats off Libya and Tunisia in the Strait of Sicily on March 2. This was preceded by a dispute on the open sea with the so-called Libyan Coastguard on March 2. Rescuers and refugees were threatened with armed force by the Libyans. There were chaotic scenes and one person drowned. SOS Humanity said the Libyan Coast guard used violence and fired live bullets into the water during its life-threatening intervention, forcing migrants to jump ionto the water. The 'Humanity 1' managed to rescue 77 migrants, but many others were forced on board a Libyan Coastguard boat, separating at least six family members from each other. The crew of the 'Humanity 1' allegedly failed to act under the instructions of the Libyan authorities, which Italy claimed were responsible for coordinating the operation.
