Low tides hamper salvage

Fri May 01 13:54:36 CEST 2015 Timsen

Divers and marine engineers from South Africa and the Netherlands were assisting in the re-floating of the "JS Danube". Low tides were hampering efforts to get the ship off. At the time the vessel went aground, the tide stood at 2.3 metres. It was hoped the tides would reach a Level of 3.2 metres making it sufficient enough to allow the salvage crew to examine the vessel and tow it to port.High tides were expected on May 1. The vessel was carrying 46000 tonnes of coal. The foreship was damaged when it hit the coral reef. No oil was spilt. The ship has 24 Ukranian sailors aboard. It sailed from Egypt through Namibia's Walvis Bay Port ferrying coal imported by a Mombasa-based cement factory.
