Questions Over Dredger's Seaworthiness

This is after reports indicated that the vessel, SI HANG CAI SHAI, previously known as Tokai Maru 8, is not seaworthy. The Kenya Ports Authority has however denied the claims, saying the vessel was testing its equipment.KPA said the vessel has been in the country for three years and was used during the dredging and construction of Berth 19.It is expected to proceed to Lamu for the construction of Lamu Port, according to KPA general manager operations Twalib Khamis.Yesterday, a Seafarers' Union of Kenya official said the vessel was "not fit to sail"."It is operating below standards," said the official, who declined to be named.
