Tanker grounded in Kiel Canal

The "MCT Altair", while enroute from Klaipeda to Baitumi, ran aground in the embankment of the Kiel Canal at the crossover Schwartenbek near the Levensau Bridge on Mar 30, 2014, around 5 a.m. just a frew minutes after having left the locks in Kiel-Holtenau westbound. The Kiel-based tugs "Holtenau" and "Kitzeberg" were called to refloat the vessel. After it was pulled off, the tanker which was carrying dangerous goods was towed back to the North Port in Kiel and moored at the Bominflot bunker pier around15 p.m. for surveys and investigations. At 8 p.m. the ship resumed its voyage to Batumi. Russian engineer died in fall on board

A Russian ship engineer died early on Dec 13, 2013, in a fall he took on board the "MCT Altair" on the St. Lawrence River. The troopers and the U.S. Coast Guard were called about 1:30 a.m. to the Snell Lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway for a report of a deceased crew member aboard the "MCT Altair". Investigators determined that the vessel’s chief engineer fell about 10 feet from a flight of stairs while returning to the engine control room. Medical personnel on the vessel attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. St. Lawrence County Coroner Jamie Sienkiewicyz pronounced Mr. Menzhiliy dead. An autopsy, conducted at Massena Memorial Hospital, revealed that the man died due to a pre-existing medical condition.
