Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are sending shockwaves through global fertilizer markets, highlighting the sector’s heavy reliance on the Gulf region and the strategic vulnerability of the Strait of Hormuz. While oil markets often dominate headlines during regional crises, fertilizer supply chains, particularly nitrogen-based fertilizers such as urea, may be even more exposed to disruptions in Gulf shipping routes and natural gas infrastructure. The latest escalation has already triggered sharp price movements, supply uncertainty, and growing concerns about global food production costs.

Immediate Market Reaction

Fertilizer markets reacted quickly to the rising risk of supply disruption. Physical urea prices surged roughly $70 per tonne within days, rising from around $468–$457 per tonne to about $550, as traders priced in the possibility of restricted exports from the Gulf region.

International benchmarks show similar volatility. Futures and physical markets quickly moved above $500 per tonne, compared with roughly $440–$470 only days earlier, reflecting a sudden geopolitical risk premium.

Additional supply pressure emerged when Iranian urea plants shut down amid security concerns and gas infrastructure disruptions, tightening global nitrogen supply at a time when Northern Hemisphere farmers are preparing for spring planting.

Structural Exposure of Fertilizer Markets

The sharp reaction reflects a deeper structural vulnerability. The Middle East is a key hub for fertilizer production and export:

  • Iran alone accounts for roughly 10–12% of global urea trade.  
  • The broader Middle East represents around 25% of global urea exports.  
  • The region exports about 20 million tonnes of urea annually, making it one of the largest nitrogen supply centers globally.  
  • Several major ammonia and phosphate exporters depend on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical commodity chokepoints.  

The Gulf also dominates other fertilizer inputs. For example, roughly half of global seaborne sulfur trade originates from the Middle East, a key raw material used in phosphate fertilizer production.

Transmission to Agriculture and Food Markets

Because nitrogen fertilizers are heavily dependent on natural gas both as feedstock and energy input, any disruption to gas infrastructure or shipping routes can rapidly cascade through agricultural markets. The current escalation has already led to shutdowns or precautionary halts at several energy facilities in the region, further increasing uncertainty around fertilizer production and export flows.

Higher fertilizer prices directly raise farmers’ input costs. As nitrogen fertilizers are critical for crops such as corn, wheat, and rice, prolonged supply disruptions could translate into higher global food prices and increased inflation across agricultural commodities.

Scenarios for the Global Fertilizer Market

Several potential scenarios could shape fertilizer markets in the coming months:

  1. Short-Term Stabilization – If tensions ease and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains open, current price spikes may gradually reverse as supply flows normalize.
  2. Prolonged Risk Premium – Even without a full shutdown, elevated shipping insurance, freight costs, and supply uncertainty could keep fertilizer prices structurally higher during the 2026 planting season.
  3. Major Supply Shock – A sustained disruption to Gulf exports or energy infrastructure could significantly tighten global nitrogen supply, forcing importers to seek alternative suppliers and potentially triggering a sharp rise in fertilizer and food prices.
