Leith Chaplain Supports Abandoned Crew

Sun Jul 21 20:39:58 CEST 2019 arnekiel

The abandoned crew of the Alexander Tvardovskiy is being supported by Sailors' Society port chaplain Pauline Robertson in Leith. Captain Gennadi Kukvinof said, "We have no idea when we can set sail and go home." The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) confirmed it had found "several deficiencies" with the Cook Islands-flagged vessel. Kukvinof added, "The ship is almost ready to set sail, but the owners are fighting against paying our salary, I'm not sure how the situation will be resolved." Robertson has been supporting the nine men and one woman since 25 June, she said, "They're anxious and worried about how long they'll be here."

Detained ship running out of food

Wed Jul 17 11:39:34 CEST 2019 Timsen

The crew of the "ALexander Tvardovskiy" which was detained at the port of Leith was running out of food. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) had found several deficiencies before. The vessel was also missing valid international safety management (ISM) and ship security (ISSC) certificates. Wages had not been paid to the crew. Now Captain Gennadi Kukvinov said nine days have passed with no response to his pleas for supplies. He had sent the request for food on July 8, 2019. There was only some remainders of food, but no fresh fruit, some pieces of meat, some pieces of bread. The vessel will not be allowed to sail until the MCA has re-inspected the vessel and is satisfied that the deficiencies have been rectified."
