Bulk carrier saved German yacht skipper

Thu Feb 18 12:45:58 CET 2021 Timsen

On Feb 17, 2021, the 'Althea', enroute from PAramaribo to Gibraltar, rescued the German skipper of the French s/y "Blue Bird 2" which had been wrecked in the middle of the Atlantic on Feb 16 approximately 1180 nautical miles EAST of Martinique. Under the leadership of the CROSS AG, a Maltese freighter was vectored to the position. The sailboat had struck an obstacle during the night causing significant damage to the mast and an uncontrollable water ingress. The sole occupant of the ship, of German origin and resident in France, went into the life raft and triggered his distress beacon. Upon receipt of this alert at 4:46 am, the CROSS triggered a Falcon aircraft of the French Navy in Guyana, which spotted the raft at 10:15 a.m. The CROSS rerouted the bulk carrier which picked up the castawayon Feb 17 at 5 a.m. The freighter then continued the voyage to Gibraltar where it will disembark the survivor on Feb 25.
