No happy end for Angel saga

Mon Nov 28 10:46:52 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Angel 1" has sunk on a depth of 4400 metres after having suffered cracks of 40 meters long and 30 meters width on Nov 26, 2011, at 8.30 p.m. The ship sank 36 nautical miles off the southeast coast, 67 km off Pointe-d'Esny, about 33 hours after having pulled off the reefs at Poudre d'Or. The ship was 10 nautical miles off the coast when the divers of the Greek salvage company responsible for its bailout realized that the damage was irreparable. Examinations to the hull were conducted Nov 26 night and the following day, during which the large cracks were discovered. To keep the ship afloat, a total of 6800 m3 per hour needed to be pumped out. The situation worsened when the cracks grew on high seas. The decision was then taken to tow it as far as possible away from the coast of Mauritius. After the salvage personnel on board was evacuated, the pumps were stopped, and the vessel foundered. Pumps installed on board after more cargo was dumped

Wed Nov 23 10:42:49 CET 2011 Timsen

To enable the continuation of the recovery operation, 1 000 tons of rice dumped in the sea 35 nautical miles from the coast of Mauritius. The 33 000 tonnes of jasmine rice on board are valued at 475 dollars per ton. 9600 tons have been removed to date and much thrown into the sea On Nov 22, the cargo vessel "River Bee" was to move 35 miles off the coast of Mauritius to dump 1,000 tons of rice removed from the holds of the "Angel 1" during the last fifteen days. After a failed salvage attempt on Nov 6, the Greek salvage team had to recalculate the amount of cargo which had to be removed from the ship. On No v22 and 23, pumps with a total capacity of 6800 m3 per hour were to be installed on the "Angel 1" before the tugs were to start more salvage attempts on Nov 24 and Nov 25. More cargo to be lightered

Sat Nov 19 13:59:43 CET 2011 Timsen

1000 tons rice more will have to be removed from the cargo holds of the " Angel 1", and towing should resume next weekend. Since November 6, the tugs "Mahanuwara" and "Coral Sea Fos" had started salvage attempts, but the cargo vessel only rotated on the spot. According to calculations by the Greek salvors, the ship must be more relieved. From the 32,000 tons of rice aboard the freighter, 9600 tons have already been removed besides the 400 tons of fuel. On November 17, the "River Bee River" has been called again and removed 294 tonnes of rice. As soon as 1 000 tons are removed, the "Angel 1" will be pulled 6 nautical miles away from the East Coast for preliminary repairs to the hull. If things go wrong, the ship will sink by 4000 meters.
