Tug detained in Vigo

Sun Apr 22 15:19:55 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Eddy 1" ran low on fuel coming back from Venezuela and entered Vigo only to be detained for serious shortcomings which were fined with up to 50,000 Euros on March 19, 2018. A storm had triggered its consumption until it ran out of enough fuel to reach its destination, Rotterdam, so it opted to make a short stop in Vigo to refuel, however, without flying the mandatory Spanish flag. The Civil Guard denounced it to the Maritime Captaincy and, as a result of the visit of their inspectors, ordered the arrest for serious deficiencies related to the safety of the ship due to the deficient rescue and fire fighting devices and the navigational equipment. The shortcomings also included documentaries such as the lack of a valid certification or a liability insurance of the shipowner. . Its five crew were found to have scarce food for a voyage started in Venezuela. With regard to the working conditions of the crew - most of them from Croatia - the Captaincy resolution also added breaches of the International Convention on Maritime Labour. The tug remained moored in the dock of commerce. The consignee Noroeste Shipping was in permanent contact with the owner of the "Eddy 1", its classification society Bureau Veritas and with the Dutch Maritime Administration with the aim to correct the shortcomings.
