Libya defenced violance during removal of migrants

Thu Nov 22 13:11:58 CET 2018 Timsen

The "Nivin", which was evacuated by Libyan security forces from the illegal immigrants who had barricaded themselves in the ship for ten days was due to leave the port of Misurata, on Nov 22 after repairing an electrical fault inflicted on it. The Lebanese Ambassador to Libya Mohammed Skaineh had contacted the captain of the Lebanese ship, Bassam Sabat, and contributed to ending the crisis of migrants. The Libyan authorities have defended the use of violence by police as they forced dozens of migrants off the ship 10 days after being picked up at sea fearing for their safety and welfare if they were detained in Libya. They had received an appeal from the ship's captain, the agency and the ship's owner that they had carried out the rescue operation and then became hostages. Their movement was limited, there were two crew members who jumped into the sea fearing for themselves after they were threatened with slaughter because they promised to take them to Italy or Malta, but brought them back to Libya instead. The migrants reportedly refused to disembark in the port city of Misrata, saying Libya was too dangerous for them. Security forces boarded the ship late on Nov 20 after negotiations with the migrants failed to convince them to leave the Nivin voluntarily. The operation turned violent after the migrants tried to stop their removal from the vessel. A number of migrants needed hospital treatment, before being taken to a detention centre in Misrata.

Migrants would rather die than disembark in Libya

Thu Nov 15 18:31:07 CET 2018 Timsen

14 refugees were disembarked at the beginning of the evening of Nov 14, including a Sudanese woman and her baby, leaving 77 migrants still on the "Nivin". It concerns people from countries such as Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia and Bangladesh, among them women and children on board. The Libyan authorities were in negotiations with the migrants who were still on the ship. Some people were in distress and needed medical help, but did not want to disembark. The most vulnerable refugees must be offered an alternative to detention. The UN refugee organization said that it was worried and would do everything to achieve a peaceful solution to the situation. Dozens of migrants have locked themselves into the ship off Misrata and refused to leave, saying that Libya was too dangerous and therefore do not want to disembark. Some migrants would rather die than disembark in Libya. The ship has been in the port of Misrata since last weekend. On Nov 9, the crew of the"Nivin" saved over 90 boat refugees who were on their way to Europe. Six ships had sailed by before the "Nivin" finally stopped and pulled the people out of the sea.
