Bitumen tanker sank one day after flooding

Fri Jan 24 19:28:12 CET 2020 Timsen

The situation of the 'Reem 5' further deteriorated after being abandoned by its crew. The asphalt tanker was drifting in western direction on Jan 23 partially submerged in pos. 22 19 00N 65 03 00 E. Due to the engine room flooding the vessel finally sank in pos. 22 19 20 N, 065 06 36 E on Jan 24. The Indian Coastguard had continued to monitor the status of the vessel, failing to contact its operator, the Aurum Ship Management of the United Arab Emirates. Also the 'Ganga K' had waited to monitor the condition of the asphalt tanker, before taking the rescued 13 crew members to Mumbai. The 'Reem 5' had been detained in Oman in June 2019 due to a problem with ship certificates.

Tanker abandoned in Arabian Sea

Thu Jan 23 18:59:07 CET 2020 Timsen

The 'Reem 5', en route from Basrah to Okha in Gujarat with a cargo of bitumen, issued a distress signal on Jan 23, 2020, around 6 a.m. after having suffered a flooded engine room and being in danger of sinking. The Indian Coastguard coordinated an SAR operation for the ship which was 90 miles inside the Pakistan SAR region, and all 13 crew members were rescued in rough seas by the nearby Indian bulkcarrier m/v 'Ganga K' (IMO: 9482110) in the morning. It was expected to arrive in Mumbai with the castaways on board on Jan 25. The disabled and abandoned tanker went adrift in the Arabian Sea 185 miles southwest of Karachi.
