West Carrier saved fisherman

Fri Mar 28 10:46:40 CET 2014 Timsen

After a fishing vessel got in trouble enroute to Skjervøy on Mar 27, 2014, at 3:47 a.m. north of the Gisund Bridge at Finnsnes in Troms, the "West Carrier" rescued its skipper. The cargo ship had sailed from Tromso-Breivika Port short past midnight and was soon on site after the wooden fishing boat allided with an ice flow in stormy weather. The boat took in water and sank within short time. There had been quite a few thick and large ice floes which had drifted from Laksefjord into the strait. The single man aboard the 29-foot boat jumped into a life raft. The "West Carrier" was first on scene and launched a rescue boat to recover the skipper. Also the Hurtigruten ferry "Richard With" meanwhile arrived at the accident site. At 4:15 ga.m. the castaway was picked up and taken to shore where he was accomodated in a hotel and later questioned by the police.
