The Royal Malaysian Police has taken over investigation into the case of the seven Somalian pirates who were detained by the Malaysian Armed Forces while attempting to hijack the "Bunga Laurel" in the Gulf of Aden on Jan 20. The seven pirates arrived at Port Klang's Liquid Bulk Terminal at 9.15 a.m. Jan 31 and were taken to Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for a medical check-up. They are now detained at the Bukit Jalil Detention Centre. Malaysian naval commandos had rescued the "Bunga Laurel" with 23 crew onboard, from the Somali pirates who were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and pistols about 333 nautical miles east of Oman. The rescue mission, codenamed "Operasi Fajar" was carried out together with the Royal Malaysian Navy's auxiliary ship "Bunga Mas 5". The commandos overpowered the pirates after a gun battle that left three of the pirates injured.

The "Bunga Laurel" loaded with lubricating oil and ethylene dichloride, continued its voyage to Singapore . The Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) thanked the armed forces’ Combined Special Forces Task Group (a joint special action force comprising navy, army and airforce commandos) for their swift action. The captured pirates have been held under the custody of the navy at an unspecified location pending further action. Despite the gunfire during the rescue mission, codenamed Operation Fajar, the ship sustained minimal damage and had no problem in resuming operations. The pirates were given first aid and food aboard the ship.

Malaysian tanker Bunga Laurel was boarded by Somali pirates in the Arabian sea (about 300 nautical miles east of Oman coast) at 12.15am on Jan21 (8.15pm Thursday, Gulf time). Vessel loaded with lubricating oil and ethylene dichloride, worth some 10 mil USD, was sailing to Singapore. Malaysia's navy said it sent a ship and a helicopter to the Bunga Laurel, which was then 14 miles (22 kilometers) away, after crew members locked themselves in a citadel and activated a distress call. Bunga Mas 5, a naval auxiliary ship which provides protection, had just completed its escort mission and was 14 nautical miles away from Bunga Laurel, was ordered to proceed with the rescue operation. Eurocopter Fennec helicopter was launched for a reconnaissance, and after command center gathered all information, rescue operation started.
