Medevac off Port Elizabeth

Thu Mar 08 09:00:22 CET 2018 Timsen

On March 7, 2018, at 7 a.m. the NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew, accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, aboard the sea rescue craft "Spirit of Toft", launched to rendezvous with the "Championship", sailing from Itaquai to Singapore, to medevac a crew member, aged 33, from Russia, suffering complications to a previous injury to the upper thigh. The NSRI Port Elizabeth had been alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority on March 6 at 10 p.m. and informed that the ship would be nearing the port the following early morning. Upon arrival on the scene, 8.5 nautical miles off-shore of Port Elizabeth, the NSRI rescue crew and the EMS rescue paramedic boarded the ship and the patient was found to be in a stable condition and requiring to be stretcher bound. A high angle lowering system was prepared and the patient was secured into a Stokes basket stretcher and transferred from the ship onto the sea rescue craft and brought safely into Port without incident in the care of the EMS rescue paramedic and he has been transported to hospital by EMS ambulance in a stable condition for further care.
