Bulk carrier in danger of sinking after collision with Mirabella

Wed Jan 24 09:13:53 CET 2024 Timsen

On Jan 23, 2024, at 3.35 a.m. the 'Omega' was in collision with the bulkcarrier 'Mirabella'(IMO: 9145889), which was en route Oman to Taicang, carrying a cargo of 45,000 tons of iron ore and had 24 crew members on board, about 15 nautical miles northeast of the Jigu Reef, 16 nautical miles north of the Yangtze Estuary lighthouse in approximate position 122-36.9 E31-22.8 N. There were 21 crew members, 16 of whom were Turkish nationals, on the ship, three of whom were injured. The 'Omega' had dragged anchor due to a storm in the area and was then hit at port side by the 'Mirabella'. The ship went down by the stern and was in danger of sinking. The Donghai Rescue Bureau of the Ministry of Transport immediately launched an SAR operation. It sent lifeboats and the rescue helicopter B-7359 to the scene. Also the two Chineses Coast Guard vessels 'Hai Xun 012', 'Jong Hai Jiu 101', and 'Jong Hai Jiu 112' joined the operation, and the crew of the 'Mirabella' was brought to safety. The master of the 'Omega' was arrested by the Coast Guard. The 'Omega', wich was carrying a cargo of 47,216 tons of steel billets and was bound from Singapore to Jiangyin, had dragged anchor due to a storm in the area. The 'Mirabella' suffered damage at the bow and cargo hold no. 5. Despite the significant damage and water ingress it took on board the 21 castaways from a lifeboat and has now moored in pos. 31° 11.40' N 122° 29.58' E on Shanghai Anchorage at 6.30 a.m. UTC. Forecast on scene were strong winds of force 6 to 8 gusting 9 to 10 in the Taiwan Strait, most of the South China Sea, and the Beibu Gulf. Parts of the Taiwan Strait will have winds force 9 and gusts of force 10 to 11.
