Vessel seized in Plymouth for illegal fishing

Wed Mar 14 11:04:48 CET 2012 Timsen

The owners of the "Cap Frehel" have been ordered to pay nearly £10,000 in fines and costs for catching protected species with an illegal net. The vessel caught nearly 12,000 kilograms of fish when part of its net had a mesh which was too small. The United Kingdom Border Agency boarded the vessel on Mar 13, 2012, brought it to Plymouth and skipper Arnaud Fautrel appeared before city magistrates. They both admitted failing to comply with catch composition requirements when part of its net was beneath regulation size. Both skipper and company were unaware that part of the net was the wrong size. Magistrates fined Arcoma SM £8,300 and ordered the company to pay £1,582 in costs. Fautrel was fined £625 and ordered to pay £15 victim surcharge.
