Tanker assisted in rescue of 14 fishermen

The 'Gas Ionian' assisted the Indian fishing boat 'GN Sabari Vasan' which had sailed from Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin, with 14 crew and suffered an engine breakdown and a damaged propeller on Aug 4, 2020. It was dangerously drifting owing to the rough South East Monsoon weather. In a coordinated Search and Rescue mission (SAR), the Indian Coast Guard rescued the 14 fishermeafter the 'Gas Ionian', that was passing by the stranded boat, had relayed the information to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Chennai. On Aug 5, the ICGS 'Shaurya', which was in the region, towed the boat back to the safety of the Nagapattinam fishing harbour for repairs from its position nearly 88 miles east of the port.
