Medevac off West Cork
A crew member of the 'L.E. George Bernard Shaw' was injured during sea exercises off the coast of West Cork in the night of March 9, 2022. The Castletownbere RNLI boat was launched for assistance at 10 p.m. on request of the Valentia Coastguard Marine Coordination Centre. The naval vessel was at anchor at Lawrence Cove off Bere Island. Just before 10.30 p.m., the lifeboat arrived on scene. The victim was then transferred by stretcher from the naval vessel to the lifeboat where he received casualty care. On arrival at Castletownbere RNLI Station, the injured man was met by paramedics from the National Ambulance Service and subsequently received medical assessment and attention.
Franch trawler seized
The 'LÉ George Bernard Shaw' has detained the French-registered fishing vessel 'Miss Jacqueline 2' for an alleged breach of fishing regulations 180 nautical miles west of Mizen Head on April 26, 2020. The trawler was now being escorted to Castletownbere in Cork. Gardaí will take charge of the vessel once it arrives. This brings to four the number of vessels detained by the Naval Service in 2020.
