Gemser 1 in rescue operation for rower in distress

Tue Jun 14 11:09:30 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Gesmer 1" participated in the the rescue operation for the the rower Sean Moriarty from Dingle, who has given up on an attempt to row across the Atlantic Ocean from eastern Newfoundland in the night of June 13, 2011. He had been at sea for almost two days in his 15-metre boat "Positive Outcome". Moriarty After his boat flipped over at least half a dozen times being buffeted by three to four metre waves, he called for rescue. At approximately 5:20 p.m., he told SAR co-ordination officials in St. John's that he was wearing a dry suit and that because his vessel lost its electronic equipment during the incident, he was unable to continue on a Trans-Atlantic crossing. He requested a tow to St. John's. The Coast Guard vessel "Cape Roger" and the nearby "Gesmer I" as well as a Cormorant helicopter were tasked to the scene. Moriarty was picked up by the Coast Guard Auxilary vessel "Nautical Legend" and was towed back to St. John'S at about 6:00 a.m. Moriarty said he plans to ship his boat home and return to Ireland, where he runs a construction company.
