Fish carrier disabled off Galway
TIn the morning of Aug 4, 2020, the 'Aqua Transporter', which was carrying 32 cubic tonnes of fuel and two cubic tonnes of lubricating oil, lost power and was drifting towards rocks a few miles off Slyne Head near Galway. The Coast Guard contacted the naval service after receiving a request for help from the ship. The patrol boat 'LÉ Niamh' was on routine patrol just a few miles away and responded to the emergency call. With winds picking up and pushing the ship closer to the coast, it quickly became clear that the navy could not wait for a tug to tow it out of the danger zone. It took seven hours for the 'LÉ Niamh' to tow the vessel to a safe anchoring position north of the Aran Islands. The navy ship remained on the scene until a tug arrived from Castletownbere to tow the 'Aqua Transporter' into Galway for repairs.
