Hanseatic Eagle detained foralleged environmental pollution

Sat Feb 09 16:28:01 CET 2019 Timsen

The "Hanseatic Eagle" was detained in Chornomorsk by inspectors of the Crimean-Black Sea State Ecological Inspectorate, allegedly for environmental pollution on Feb 5, 2019. An inspection was carried out on board the vessel by representatives of the State Environmental Inspectorate, accompanied by an ecologist from the State Enterprise Administration of Ukrainian ports, on Feb 2 during loading operations. The inspectors and the ecologist took water samples from port waters around the vessel's side. On Feb 4, representatives from the environmental inspectorate, accompanied by an environmentalist, returned to the "Hanseatic Eagle" and presented the master a letter about the alleged pollution of port waters area around the vessel. The master did not accept the letter, did not sign the required documents, and did not allow ecologists to conduct a further inspection of the vessel. In response, the State Environmental Inspectorate's decision to detain the vessel on the basis of Article 91 of the Merchant Shipping Code of Ukraine was submitted to the master, the cCaptain of the port and the vessel's agent, on Feb 5. Neither the master of the vessel nor the agent have paid the fine which amounts to 800 Ukrainian Hryvnia. On payment of the fine, the vessel will be released from detention and permitted to depart the port.
